چکیده

The female reproductive tract is where competition between the sperm of different males takes place, aided and abetted by the female herself. Intense postcopulatory sexual selection fosters inter-sexual conflict and drives rapid evolutionary change to generate a startling diversity of morphological, behavioural and physiological adaptations. We identify three main issues that should be resolved to advance our understanding of postcopulatory sexual selection. We need to determine the genetic basis of different male fertility traits and female traits that mediate sperm selection; identify the genes or genomic regions that control these traits; and establish the coevolutionary trajectory of sexes.

Postcopulatory Sexual Selection Is Associated with Reduced Variation in Sperm Morphology

BACKGROUND The evolutionary role of postcopulatory sexual selection in shaping male reproductive traits, including sperm morphology, is well documented in several taxa. However, previous studies have focused almost exclusively on the influence of sperm competition on variation among species. In this study we tested the hypothesis that intraspecific variation in sperm morphology is driven by the...

High opportunity for postcopulatory sexual selection under field conditions.

In polygamous systems, male fitness is determined not only by mating success but also by fertilization success. Despite the growing interest over the past several decades in postcopulatory sexual selection, its relative importance compared to precopulatory sexual selection remains a subject of debate. Here, we use extensive behavioral observations of a seminatural population of Hawaiian swordta...

Sperm performance in conspecific and heterospecific female fluid

Divergent sexual selection within allopatric populations may result in divergent sexual phenotypes, which can act as reproductive barriers between populations upon secondary contact. This hypothesis has been most tested on traits involved in precopulatory sexual selection, with less work focusing on traits that act after copulation and before fertilization (i.e., postcopulatory prezygotic trait...

Correlated evolution between targets of pre‐ and postcopulatory sexual selection across squamate reptiles

Sexual selection reflects the joint contributions of precopulatory selection, which arises from variance in mating success, and postcopulatory selection, which arises from variance in fertilization success. The relative importance of each episode of selection is variable among species, and comparative evidence suggests that traits targeted by precopulatory selection often covary in expression w...

Postcopulatory sexual selection influences baculum evolution in primates and carnivores

The extreme morphological variability of the baculum across mammals is thought to be the result of sexual selection (particularly, high levels of postcopulatory selection). However, the evolutionary trajectory of the mammalian baculum is little studied and evidence for the adaptive function of the baculum has so far been elusive. Here, we use Markov chain Monte Carlo methods implemented in a Ba...

Secondary sexual trait size reveals competitive fertilization success in Drosophila bipectinata Duda

The evolution of male secondary sexual traits traditionally has been ascribed to precopulatory sexual selection. In contrast, the importance of postcopulatory sexual selection for the evolution of secondary sexual traits is uncertain, and what little evidence exists for this process to contribute to the evolution of such traits is mixed. Here we test the hypothesis in Drosophila bipectinata Dud...
